A man who thought he was about to set off a thousand pound bomb in front of the Federal Reserve building in New York was arrested by the FBI Wednesday. Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis of Bangladesh came to the US with the sole purpose of carrying out a terrorist attack according to FBI reports.
The FBI said there was never a threat to citizens as they had been keeping Nafis under observation.
Nafis has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al-Qaeda. He entered no plea in front of a federal judge.
In the FBI’s report, Nafis reportedly to the US in January and began to seek out contacts to help him conduct the attack. One of the people contacted was a source for the FBI.
Nafis had obtained a student visa by claiming to be a college student in Missouri. Nafis recorded a video prior to the attempt claiming “we will not stop until we attain victory or martyrdom.”
“We have to be vigilant and I can assure you we’re going to remain vigilant,” New York police commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters.
