Terrorists detonated two bombs near a fruit market in Hyderabad, killing 16 and injuring 117 others. The death toll is expected to rise as several of the wounded are in critical condition.
The bombs were placed on bicycles about 500 feet apart near the heavily used marketplace. No terror group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Police forces in other major Indian cities are on high alert for copycat attacks. Increased street presence and random vehicle searches are now in place.
Indian Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters they had received intelligence of a potential terrorist bombing but they were not able to obtain information regarding the exact location. The bombs were described as “improvised explosive devices.”
The city is a stronghold of the Muslim political party MIM and has a history of tension between Muslims and the majority Hindus in the region.
