Three people are facing charges related to assisting one of the Boston Marathon bombers.
Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakova are friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in UMass-Dartmouth and according to investigators removed evidence from Tsarnaev’s apartment in an attempt to deceive police. The two 19-year-olds removed a laptop, backpack and Vaseline that was used in producing the pressure cooker bombs.
A third suspect, Robel Phillipos of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was charged with making false statements to federal law enforcement officials.
Kadyrbayev is reportedly the leader of the three. He recognized after seeing news reports that hollowed out fireworks in Tsarnaev’s room was used as part of the bombing. He put the fireworks in a backpack and disposed of it before police could search the room.
Officials also captured a text exchange between Kadyrbayev and Tsarnaev where the bomber told his friend to “come to my room and take whatever you want.” The exchange took place just two hours before the brothers carjacked a Chinese citizen and shot an MIT police officer.
