Two earthquakes of 6.2 and 6.4 struck within 2 ½ hours of each other just south of Panama on Sunday. Initial reports had indicated one 6.6 quake but data from the United States Geological Survey showed the two quakes within a 14 mile stretch of ocean floor.

The two quakes, situated on the famed “Ring of Fire” struck in the late evening Sunday night. The quakes caused no damage and a tsunami alert was not issued despite the double quake.

The quakes were the strongest of the six in the last two days of 5.0 or greater that have occurred along the Pacific Ring of Fire. The “Ring” runs from the bottom of Australia, around the Pacific Ocean rim including the US West Coast and down the South American coast. Ninety percent of the world’s major earthquakes happen along the “Ring of Fire.”
