Venezuela Facing Massive Power Outages

Over 70% of Venezuela, including the capital city of Caracas, is without power after what the government is calling “sabotage”.

The blackout caused massive traffic issues as all traffic lights are out and underground transportation systems came to a complete stop. Thousands of workers were sent home because businesses could not operate without electricity.

President Nicolas Maduro posted an accusation on twitter blaming the “extreme right” for damaging the transportation lines and later said on state television the act was “part of a low-level war.”

Maduro, who took over the presidency after the death of extremist dictator Hugo Chavez, instructed the military to “protect the entire country.”

Though the nation has huge oil reserves, the country depends on hydroelectrical plants for 70% of the country’s power. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles told media that Maduro is just concocting conspiracy theories to deflect attention from the nation’s problems.
