A 15-year-old girl raped by her father who later killed her baby has been sentenced to 100 lashes under the Sharia law in the Islamic nation of Maldives.

The girl was convicted for engaging in premarital sex. She was charged after an investigation into her stepfather’s attack precipitated by the discovery of a baby’s body buried on an island in the northern part of the country. The girl’s mother has been charged with failing to report abuse to authorities.

Prosecutors are now trying to claim that the conviction and sentence is not related to her stepfather’s case but have not shown proof to back their assertion.

Government officials said they did not agree with the punishment and are looking into changing the law after pressure from groups such as Amnesty International.

Amnesty International revealed evidence that lashing of sexual assault victims is common practice in the Maldives. Last month another girl who had been abused was convicted of the same charges and sentenced to lashes. The girls, because they are under 18, will not be lashed until their 18th birthday unless they specifically request it or have their sentences overturned.
