Luke 21:11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
Survivors of the massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan could be facing a serious health issue if they were near the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant.
The World Health Organization has released a report saying those in the area of the plant are at increased risk for developing cancer. The report is part of a research effort by international experts on the aftermath of the tsunami that killed 16,000 people.
The biggest risk is to infants in the area. Girls exposed have a greater risk of solid tumors and breast cancer as they age. Boys are at higher risk for leukemia, as much as 7% higher than the rest of the population.
The biggest concern was for girls and thyroid cancer. The report says girls exposed could have a 70% increased risk for thyroid cancer in their lifetime.
Emergency response workers in the area are also at greater risk because of exposure to radiation.
“This will remain an important element in the public health response to the disaster for decades,” Dr. Maria Neira of the WHO told the BBC.
