The selling on Wall Street was so dramatic Monday that it triggered unprecedented emergency freezes on stocks.
Stocks and exchange-traded funds were automatically halted more than 1,200 times, according to Nasdaq.
The high level of trading pauses highlights just how extreme the selloff was in a short span of time. Fears about China’s economic slowdown caused the Dow to plummet over 1,000 points when the market opened. The Dow ended down 588 points, its worst decline since August 2011.
You may have seen headlines to describe the market carnage like a trillion dollar’s worth of wealth wiped away in a single day. But it’s worth noting just how much is held by Americans in the stock market in the first place.
MarketWatch took a look at the Federal Reserve’s financial accounts of the United States report for answers — and did some back-of-the-envelope math.
As of March 31, households and nonprofits held $24.1 trillion in stocks. That’s both directly, and through mutual funds, pension funds and the like. That also includes the holdings of U.S.-based hedge funds, though you’d have to think that most hedge funds are held by households.

Author and Bible teacher Jonathan Cahn says he has been so swamped with questions and concerns about the looming end of the Shemitah year on Sept. 13 that he can’t answer them all.
“We have been deluged with people calling, emailing, asking questions from all over the country, wanting to know what’s happening. So we decided to put out a video,” Cahn told WND via email.
In the message, posted to YouTube, Cahn calls for a period of national prayer and repentance leading up to the pivotal month of September.
He also issued a new warning about a “desecration” that often precedes judgment and is already present in American society. He calls for Christians to prepare for persecution and get ready to stand for God in a coming period of strife that will increasingly be devoid of “gray areas” or middle ground.

Trading was halted for more than two hours on the New York Stock Exchange floor Wednesday after an internal technical issue was detected – which then set off speculation that a cyber-glitch at United Airlines and a temporary online outage at the Wall Street Journal newspaper were connected.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said President Obama had been briefed on the glitch that took out trading on the floor of the NYSE by White House counterterrorism and homeland security adviser Lisa Monaco and chief of staff Denis McDonough.
He also said despite indications that it was not a cyber-breach, the administration was “keenly aware of the risk that exists in cyber space right now.”

Lori’s House, a maternity home for young mothers, will celebrate its Grand Opening on July 4th, 2015 at Morningside in Blue Eye, MO.
In the summer of 2011, Jim and Lori Bakker broke ground to build a beautiful 17,000 square foot home, with three floors of facilities and living quarters where life will be cherished and hope returned. This will be a place of ministry, love, and healing with its main goal to save babies by providing an alternative to abortion and caring for their mothers.
Lori’s House has been built debt free through generous and loving donations and will house up to 18 young mothers and their babies as well as a round-the-clock caregiving staff and the dedicated, loving female students from Morningside Church’s Masters Media program.
There will be no charge for a young woman who is accepted to live at Lori’s House throughout her pregnancy. The ministry, through donations, will provide assistance for food, clothing, and counseling. Educational classes and job training will also be provided and an individual program will be tailored depending on each young mother’s special needs.
Busses will be transporting guests from the Grace Street building at Morningside following the Jim Bakker Show taping on July 4th with the Grand Opening Celebration beginning at 2pm.
