John Kilpatrick Shows Those on Grace Street the Power of Prayer and of God’s Power

John-Kilpatrick-preachesThe Tuesday night service began with Kevin Shorey firing up the crowd with gospel and patriotic songs like “God Bless The U.S.A.”

He then turned the worship time over to Tammy Sue who lead an acoustic worship set with the Morningside Band. The presence of the Spirit permeated Grace Street as Tammy Sue’s soulful voice resonated deeply within those in attendance.

Tammy Sue performed “Dance With Me,” “I Give Myself Away” and “I Exalt Thee” in a duet with Kristi Blankenship.

Kevin Shorey introduced Pastor John Kilpatrick to a standing ovation.

Here are some of the highlights of Pastor Kilpatrick’s address to God’s family at Morningside:

“I never take for granted the opportunity to speak into people’s lives.”

“I don’t know about you but I love the church! I love everything about it!”

“The Earth is speaking and it’s speaking loud and clear and the people better hear it. It’s amazing the connection between sin and the Earth.”

“When Adam and Eve sinned it showed up in the Earth. When Cain killed Abel, God said the Earth would not support him and he had to wander as a vagabond. When Jesus rose, there was a great Earthquake. The Earth responded.”

“When the Ten Commandments were given, the mountains shook.”

“A few years ago, President Obama said that Israel needs to return to the pre-1967 borders. I watched it with my staff and said ‘oh my.’ And the following Sunday, an EF-5 tornado ripped Joplin, Missouri.”

“We’re looking at a time right now where I’ve never seen deception as thick and syrupy as we hear it today. You really need to know who your shepherd is because if you’re under the right covering there is protection there. If you’re under the wrong covering, you’re subject to everything that comes out of that pastor’s mouth. You have to be very careful what covering you bring yourself under.”

“I’d rather be under a man who’s not educated but is solidly under the Bible than some of these slick pastors today.”

“Today, it’s difficult to find [Biblically based] kinds of pastors. In older days, it wasn’t but today it is.”

“The Lord said ‘I’m giving my people a season change’. But when there’s a major breakthrough, it’s not just one thing, it brings a lot of other breakthroughs with it. Get ready for the month of July because a lot of breakthroughs are coming in Jesus name!”

“I believe that no matter what you come upon in your life if you have the Holy Spirit within you, He can manifest any gift within you at any time.”

“I saw the price that my mother paid [to take us to church] and I knew there had to be something to the power of God for her to take such abuse. And the only time I ever felt peace [as a child] was at church.”

“I’m sitting there watching this class in biology [when I was 14] and no one had ever called me John. All of a sudden the volume on the movie we were watching went down and I jumped. And in my left ear, I heard the Lord call me in an audible voice. He said ‘John, this day I have called you to preach my Word. But you have to stay way from the kids in your neighborhood because they will pull you away. And then he told me five things. And he said this day I will confirm the call in your ear. And as soon as he was done, the volume came up on the projector. Five minutes later the class was over. I was stunned because I didn’t believe that God knew where I went to school!”

“Filling in for my teacher was a retired Baptist pastor. I was sitting at my desk with the books stacked up for the rest of the day and I’m trying to ascertain what happened last period. I heard the voice of God, I couldn’t feel my legs, I was about to cry. He walked back to where I was and said ‘son, what’s going on with you?’ I said ‘why do you ask?’ And he said “because I see the Glory of God all over you son.”

“That same a day a woman raised her hands on our porch and spoke in tongues to my mom. The interpretation was “this day I’m calling your son to preach for me.” Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam! And my mom then says ‘so, what did you want to tell me?”

“Here’s what this wise pastor knew that I didn’t know. Before you can be a successful minister, you need to be a successful pray-er.”

“Even after church on Wednesday, this man would teach us the Word of God for an hour and then you’re better be listening because after he got through teaching the word using this old car antenna he would walk up, give us that antenna and say ‘now, teach me what I teach you.’ And I’d make a mistake as kids do, he would say ‘that’s not theologically sound. And some day you’ll be behind the pulpit and you’ll be confronted or mislead somebody.’  And then he would gently lead us to be better.”

“When I first started praying with him, I felt so deprived. I felt like a young man who wanted to play ball. I’d hear a ball hit with an aluminum bat and think ‘God, why can’t my dad be out there watching me. I’m stuck here with this old man in a prayer meeting.’ And I didn’t understand. And sometimes we mistake destiny for destination. Destination is a place. Destiny is a pull on your life. And when I heard those boys playing ball and think ‘why can’t I do that”? And this man would tell preacher stories and my heart would just burn. And I would just think ‘God, you think someday I may have stories to tell?’ And I hear his stories and felt like I could never measure up. And over time, instead of deprived, I felt very blessed because I had a recognition of what he meant in my life. He literally became my father, my spiritual father, my mentor. He had a profound effect. He taught me how to pray. He taught me about prayer. He showed me how to pray.”

“One of the most important things that ever happened to me and still effects me to this day. A revival broke out. An evangelist came and the church began to follow him like a pied piper. This guy captured the hearts of the people. But pastor one day called him in and said ‘son, I’m going to shut down the revival, because I can’t put my finger on it but I know something’s not right. Something’s wrong.’ So he shut the revival down and we come to find out the evangelist had been molesting the girls and boys in the church. And he went to jail. And many people left when that evangelist left and when the truth came out none of them came back to thank the pastor for protecting them. Before I was shaving, I saw my first major church split and it was over revival. And I saw a pastor hurt deeply.”

After all this, he said “boys, I’ve tried to be a good father to you but my time is up. And I’m going to leave and go to Winter Haven, Florida. And it felt like someone stuck a knife into my gut. And he said ‘God’s going to send you someone who will love you like I love you.” And I said ‘there’s no way.’ And that night I didn’t lay on the floor with him when he told his preacher stories. I went into the sanctuary and sat alone and said ‘God, I’m going to leave this place. I’m going to get a city bus and never come back. And the bus didn’t run on Sunday night. And I thought I could walk home but I couldn’t walk home because it was 1964 and there was the civil rights movement, looting and fires around our church. So I couldn’t walk home.

I went through one of the greatest painful times that night but God had it fixed because I couldn’t run. Because if I had gotten on a city bus, I never would have come back to church. So I felt trapped and I looked as people were praying. And I see him back there and I say ‘God, this is…just…God. I’m hurting so bad. Help me Jesus.’

And the pastor got up and said “I’m going back to the house” and went to reach his shoes. But he never picked them up. He came to the prayer bench and sat down. I came and sat next to him. Church, that day was hell. That atmosphere was so full of curses where people cursed the pastor. And 17 of us sat there that night. And the doors of the church were locked five different ways. We had big metal doors and on each side there were jambs under the hinges. And after everyone was sitting on the altar benches, and I’ll never forget this, all of a sudden it was like a force hit those doors and those doors flew open and I can still to this day think about it and hear those metal doorknobs hit those plaster walls.

And it didn’t do any damage, didn’t tear anything apart, just opened. And into that church walked one angel, he came right into the sanctuary and turned like a soldier and walked to where pastor always prayed. The supernatural for my pastor wasn’t abnormal, it was normal. And right behind that angel came another one. He came in like a soldier and walked to another side of the room where a bookcase stood where I started the church library. And when that angel stood there, that bookcase looked like a matchbox. They had no wings, they didn’t say a word, they had no weapons. But when you looked at them, the word that came to you was ‘warrior.’

They had the tight latches on their shoes, they filled that church from the floor to the ceiling. And to see something that big move was mind boggling. And they stood like they were at attending. When I saw them, I said, ‘I’m dreaming.” And remember, five minutes before I was saying I was going to catch a bus and leave. And five minutes later I’m having one of the biggest events of my life.

They had an aura around them. They never spoke. We didn’t address them, they didn’t address us. And I thought “I’m dreaming.” And I pulled my hand up and touched my face and said “no, I’m not dreaming, this is real.” And when I realized I was dreaming I sat back on the altar and took in the site. 15 years old. And I looked at that angel there, and that angel there, and I remember anything about them. They looked mighty. I would not want to mess with them.

And the angels left. And when the angels left the doors were open. And the pastor got up when the angels left and walked up the aisle. And I wasn’t going to let him go and leave me on the altar. And I followed him up the aisle. And that was the first time I felt the power of God. Where the angels walked there was such a power in that building. All 17 of us went down and went out. And I didn’t wake up until the next morning when the sunlight hit my face.

And we never made it to the doors. They were wide open.

When Wednesday night came around the church was packed. Many people who left when the evangelist left came back. People were standing. And during the song service nothing happened. But when the pastor said ‘let’s bow our heads for the offering’ and that moment, 38 people who never received the baptism of the Holy Spirit before receive it at that moment.”

And God told the pastor not to leave, to stay there and pour into those boys because they will touch more people in their generation than you did in yours. And he did.

I’ll never forget those angels. They never lifted a finger, they never had weapons, but just their presence broke the hell of that house. That church never had a problem after that. It grew, doubled and tripled just by those angels showing up.”

If you’re going through hell, God has representatives, they’re called angels and don’t ever minimize the power of angels!!

When we prayed for revival in Brownsville, it felt like it was going to start any minute. But it took 2 ½ years. The longer we prayed, the further off it seemed. So here’s what I like to say to people. If you’re praying and you feel like it’s near, it’s probably not. And if it feels far off, then it’s probably likely near.

As my mama was dying, I asked her to ask Jesus to bless your boy. And how did revival begin in Brownsville? As soon as my mama’s size 5 shoe hit the street of gold, she went up to Jesus and said “you know how you’re bringing revival to the Earth? You bring it to my son’s church!” That’s how it began!

On Father’s Day, I woke up and said ‘I’m not going to church today.’ But I remembered that I had to present a plaque to the Father of the Year. I presented the plaque to the Father of the Year and I had no Earthly idea what was going to happen. And Steve got up and started preaching like someone plugged in 220 volts. And he’s screaming “hey! God’s gonna touch you this morning!”

And he said “when I pray God’s gonna mighty touch ya!” And finally he said “if you want prayer, come forward, hurry!” We had about 1800 there and about 1000 came forward. And I was mad! I didn’t want to be there and now we have to pray for 1000 people! And just sat in my chair and thought “big boy, go at it! Help yourself.” But I jumped in and I put my arm on Steve’s back and on this guy’s head and I felt something on my ankle. And I thought “something’s messed up with the air conditioning.” And it started whipping around my legs and moving up. And my legs would not move. For the first time in my life, my body would not do anything I told it to do. I literally just froze in place.

And a guy looked at me who used to be a bouncer in a bar who had just been saved in April and he helped me back up on the platform. And there’s still 800 people in the sanctuary. My microphone was shaking, my knees were quivering, and I said “folks, this is what we’ve been waiting for! Come get it!”

I had just got through preaching a ten part series on the Glory of God and I was on the floor and can’t move. And I say under my breath “Lord, what is this?” And before He said anything else He said “Happy Father’s Day.” You know how my mother said she was sad I had no father? The Lord poured Himself out on Father’s Day. And then God said “Well, Son, this is what you were preaching on!”

I believe before Jesus comes back that God’s glory is going to fall on this nation, going to fall on his churches, going to change the Earth!

I’ve been asked ‘pastor, what’s the greatest thing you’ve ever seen in revival?’ I can’t say because I’ve seen too many. But when the Lord starts moving to heal people, like I told Jim and Lori this morning it’s like a sun coming out on a cloudy day. You can feel heat on your exposed skin. But when we felt that heat, we would know God was healing people and we never said that because people would focus on the heat and not the healer.

Then one Tuesday night, during praise and worship, it felt like the sun came out. And this woman jumps up and down and screams and she’s staring at her husband. So I grab the hand held microphone to interview her and she didn’t see me coming. She didn’t care I was coming. I said ‘what is God doing for you?’ And she didn’t look at me. She looked at her husband. I saw him staring at her husband. And he was a Vietnam veteran. He lost part of his hand to a grenade. And she was screaming watching his hand growing back. And I looked over and the meat was stitching like someone was stitching his hand. And the meat was the same color as his tan. I screamed right with her!

I think it’s time for God to show up again with something to scream about! LORD, GIVE US A MOVE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT! GIVE US SOMETHING TO SCREAM ABOUT!

One morning, I was so tired I said Lord, I can’t do it. And I looked up and I saw two soap bubbles in the balcony. And I was mad! I thought some mother was letting their kids blow bubbles. And the Lord said “NO! That’s my healing spirit. If you let me, I’ll pour out my healing spirit.” And so I began to throw up words, I didn’t feel sick, I was just throwing words. I started speaking medical language. It was like speaking in tongues but medical words. And I said if you need prayer, go to the aisles and the aisles filled up. And I was saying all kinds of medical terms and just as I looked next to the center aisle I yelled “calcified disk and spur” and something flew out of my mouth and hit some woman under her collarbone. And when it hit her, it disappeared, she screamed and fell and took 4-5 people with her.

And I thought “God, you killed her!” And they helped her up off the floor and her husband was a pastor from Kentucky. “We followed Benny Hinn for years trying to get healing.” I asked what was wrong with her and he said “calcified disk and spurs.” And she was completely healed and to this day, she’s still healed! When I asked the Lord about that thing that came out of my mouth He said “I sent my Word and healed her. When we put the Word in our mouth, it’s effective.

My prayer is this for you: Shake your religion off. Because once you’ve lived where I have lived, and I don’t say that arrogantly at all, when you’ve experience what I’ve had the privilege of experiencing, you realize how futile normal church is. Songs, a little sermon and everybody goes home. That doesn’t get it. I just say “God, send revival, send revival to this generation.”

After Pastor Kilpatrick’s inspiring talk, Pastor Jim shared with those in attendance about praying as a young man before he went to Bible college praying for the Holy Spirit and then shared with the brothers and sisters on Grace Street:

I went downtown in Minneapolis to a meeting and I wanted the real thing. And something happened to me that night. We have to get a real Holy Ghost moment. And that night I walked to the center of the room and said “Lord, I give up”. And I spoke in a language I had never learned. And that night as I walked back I spoke in tongues the whole way. And I knew, I was singing, and I sang “I’ve been with Jesus and I’m so happy.”

As I stood in that basement, I wanted God’s word more than food. But that night He called me to lay hands on the sick and I haven’t prayed for the sick as often as I should the last many years. When I started PTL, in Charlotte, North Carolina, God did such a visitation that before our first broadcast that tumors would drop off.

I remember seeing one woman who was a crippled mess is all I can say. And as we prayed, she fell to the floor as a bundle of nothing. All I could say it an unbelievable mess of a human being. And it was like I could hear bones going back together and she was healed. I understand the power of God. And I believe God wants us to see again in our ministry what God has given me yet. Something I stepped back from the last several years. Healing got to the point people despised it like those healing televangelists.

I believe God’s going to do a sovereign work but unity must come into this place. Unity but be in your home and in your church. A house divided will not stand. A church divided will not stand. The time has come for revival.

It’s time to look to Jesus!

The day of running all over to find a healer is over. The healer is Jesus.

God said ‘build a place. A safe place where people could come for sanctuary and a place to meet with God. God’s going to do things in the next few weeks and months that you’re gonna be shocked.

God didn’t build this place just to build it. Why did he build it? Because this isn’t going to be big enough.

God’s going to have church in the last days! I would say ‘get in or get out’ because if you get in the way of revival God’s not going to tolerate it. He’s going to have a church, He’s going to have a people. I don’t know why people who don’t like each other even come to church!

Pastor then began to move through the crowd prophesying and praying for people to find healing.
