Doctors in New York are reporting over 100,000 people have been infected with a new bacteria that causes the same symptoms as Lyme disease without the same rash indicators.
The researchers say that the bacteria also cannot be detected by current Lyme disease tests meaning many of the sufferers of Borrelia Miyamotoi get no explanation for their symptoms.
“Patients with this illness will develop, perhaps, fever, headache, flu-like symptoms, muscle pains — so they’ll have typical Lyme-like flu symptoms in the spring, summer, early fall,” said Dr. Brian Fallon of Columbia University. “But most of them will not develop the typical rash that you see with Lyme disease.”
While there is no test for the new bacteria, doctors confirmed the same antibiotics that treat Lyme disease will work to help cure patients.
Doctors wanted to remind people that a tick needs to be attached to you and feeding on blood for at least 24 hours before you are at risk of contracting any tick-borne disease.
