The National Park Service is erecting barricades to block veterans from visiting memorials to their fallen comrades but they will be allowing an immigration reform rally to be taking place on the “closed” National Mall.
Organizers for “Camino Americano: March for Immigration Reform” spent the day Monday setting up staging and equipment for the Tuesday rally.
The setup was taking place amid a few barriers with signs saying the area is closed due to the government shutdown.
A spokesperson for the rally told the Washington Examiner that the National Park Service is allowing the rally because of the group’s “First Amendment rights.”
About 30 members of Congress are scheduled to attend the rally including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The rally is sponsored by several immigration activist groups, the Service Employees International Union and the AFL-CIO.
