Falling Oil Prices Could Lead to Civil Unrest

Revelation 6:3-4 NCV When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" Then another horse came out, a red one. Its rider was given power to take away peace (prosperity, rest) from the earth and to make people kill each other (butcher, slaughter, to maim violently, in streets), and he was given a big sword (assassins sword, terrorist, loud, mighty, sore afraid).

Consumers love falling oil prices because of the corresponding drop in gas prices at the pump.

However, a significant slide in the price of oil could end up causing major civil unrest in the Middle East and other oil producing nations according to multiple economists and researchers.

“It’s not in the U.S. interest to have a more unstable Middle East, even if we are importing no oil from that region,” Meghan O’Sullivan of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government told CNN.

Several OPEC nations have been using their large oil revenues to pacify their people since the wake of the Arab Spring in 2010. Saudi Arabia, for example, currently subsidizes housing, health care, gasoline and many other “necessities” of life.

The result is that Saudi Arabia needs oil prices to stay around $100 a barrel just to meet their budget. Government officials privately admit they cannot sustain this level of subsidy.

An energy boom in the Western Hemisphere combined with lower demand from China threatens to cut demand by millions of barrels a year over the next three years. An analyst with the Rhodium Group told CNN demand from OPEC could fall “30%” by 2018.

The impact would also hit Africa and South America. Both Nigeria and Venezuela are believed to be spending significantly more than their current oil income. Government observers worry the economic stress could lead to revolutions in those nations.
