New York City Hit By Flash Floods

floodinginnewyorkNew York City was hit by rains so heavy that it caused flash flooding across the metro area.

The morning commute was severely hampered as many roads were too flooded to be passed by motorists.  Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn and Hudson County in New Jersey were all hit by the flash flooding.

Over three inches of rain fell on Central Park in the morning hours.  The Gowanus Canal in the Cobble Hill neighborhood flooded so quickly that cars were stranded in water two feet deep.

“The rain just came down so heavy that it wasn’t able to drain like it normally would,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Carl Erickson told the New York Daily News.

The National Weather Service has yet to confirm local figures but it appears the city’s record for rain on this date set in 1886 had been topped in various locations.  The rainfall was double the amount for the entire month of April.

Residents were concerned about possible health problems due to the chemicals and wastewater coming from the overflowing canals.
